13 actionable things you can do in 13 minutes or less to drive traffic to your site

Here are some very quick and very actionable items you can perform to your site to help in your quest for traffic.

1. Ensure your website is listed on your e-mail signature.

Why this works- It introduces your site to everyone you send e-mail to and to whomever they forward your e-mail to.

2. Send out fill in the blank tweets. Example: My next post should be about__________. Or probably even better an either or question. Example: Should I write about traffic driving or the mechanics of link building in my next post? Yes, I know they both would drive traffic. On (in this case is just more specific).

3. Do internal linking on your site from relevant words in one post to another post that may cover the same subject matter from a different angle. You can even link to podcasts or YouTube videos you have done.

Why this works- You do not need to go any further than Wiki which happens to come up number 1 in the SERPs to see that it works. This is another theory of Lance as to why but it shows the subject matter at hand has been addressed more than once and in various forms. It is more completely covered than any one article could cover it.

4. Write one detailed meta DESCRIPTION per post, per day. Use keywords in the description. Do not just list keywords. Sentence form using good grammar, spelling and punctuation and accurately describe the content.

Why this works- Matt says so! RECENTLY! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBTBEfd7z_Y .

5. Work for 20 minutes a day on high level backlinks. Spend 20 minutes the first 3 days reading these articles.

Why this works- answer is in the articles.

6. Write an article (over several days) (This one takes longer.) A thoroughly tested and well documented article debunking some SEO myth. Be careful here! Many people make a living perpetuating some of this.

7. Set up filters in your email. OK this is kind of the long way around but stay with me. If you get rid of all of the garbage that start out by saying “Make $6000 a day starting today!”. All of the time you would have spent manually sorting through those could be actually spent performing one of the other tasks on this site. See? One other piece to this… Unless you are waiting for something life changing in your e-mail, do not open your e-mail until noon. Just see how much further you get that day.

8. Personally answer e-mails concerning your site (after noon). This hopefully will become impossible after awhile just because of the shear magnitude of mail you will receive, but a personal e-mail to someone that has mad a comment on your site goes a long way in gaining a true fan!

9. Write a list on a popular subject in your field that has not been covered before.

Why this works- You can keyword this to death because you start a new subject with every sentence and search engines tend to like them as they give very direct information in a rapid fire sort of way. People also like lists. I tend to like lists of actionable information with less than 20 items per list. (just try getting through a list of 100 actionable items) Whew!

10. Find a home on Pinterest (if it is a photo or infograph), Twitter, Digg, Stumble Upon, Facebook and other social media that fits well with your material.

Why this works- Pure unadulterated exposure!

11. Work on putting together a listing of across the site keywords by subject matter. In my case I have in my strategy several keywords that I can use in any article about building links (just 5 0r 6 I want to rank for) and then find more specific keywords more closely related to the actual specific article are used as well.

Why this works-? Don’t know just seems to…Sorry some things are just like that.

12. Find a forum in your area of expertise and write one or two posts a day. Help someone out with their problems. To find a forum type in if you sell electronic squirrels “site: electronic squirrels forum”
or for gardening “site: gardening forum” These take advantage of Google operators which is a more robust and accurate way of searching.

13. Add a graphic to each article. On each graphic have a true description of that graphic (see meta descriptions above) and fill in an “alternative text” for each. See the link for a better description.

These are individually very quick items to perform and will reap you big benefits.

In the last post we talked a little about building up lists of prospects. We showed you how to work the Google search a little to get more focused returns.

Now we are going to stick with the list building task here but these lists are used for other things. Last time we were looking for opportunities to do a guest post. In that guest post you typically get a couple of links going back to your site.

This next list is one that takes the most time in building but can be used for much more than just guest posting. We are going to build this list of potentials much the way you do when you move to a new town. You find groups of people in church or schools or work and if you are judged favorably by the “old timers” you are let into their circle of friends. The question is how do you do that on line? Where do you go to get the “seed” population? Here are some ideas:

Social media- find Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+ and Tapiture (men’s Pinterest). These are all organized like a search engine because of the fact that they are. So, keep the search engine components of these sites in the back of your head when you post pictures and title your posts. Search for sites that put up material in your niche. If you are doing a gardening site look for other gardening sites. If you are promoting your site let us say, on perennials you should probably look for sites that are more encompassing like a general gardening site, gardening tools or a maybe gardening design. This way after you build up a report with them your “Using Perennials in Your Garden Designs” post on their site does not only not compete but adds value to their site.

The other sites vary in how to initially approach them but generally spend some time reading their sites or their posts and initially commenting on them in the comments area. DO NOT BLOW SMOKE! Select a post and give positive, comments on how and why you liked the post how you might use the information and why you will be back and will be bringing friends next time. Sincerity is everything. Do not drop names or your site information the first visit.

Forums: These are organized giant FAQ sites with an capability to have experts answer more specific questions in sometimes real time. Spend some time here looking at some of the subject matter you may be interested in. You can ask for help or offer some. These are close knit groups but when they see that you are providing good information and not selling your products will generally let you in. One more time, take your time.

Commenting on their blogs. Let me see here, we have a list of names from the social media sites and amazingly enough many of these people have websites of their own. So now you are in their lives in 2 different places. Again not overbearing, polite, slow and easy and sincere.

Many of these people from the forums or the social sites or the blogs also have podcasts and videos on YouTube. Just a few more places to look for them and begin a good solid relationship.

I told you in the beginning that this list takes the longest to cultivate but this is where you get to know people the best. You may tend to move people from here into your inner circles more readily. True relationships are founded here. So take your time.

The last list I am going to talk about here is already done for you. Yes, this is great stuff isn’t it? I just Googled “Gardening Blog Lists” and this is the first one that came up in the serps:
A list of top 50 Gardening blogs by Blog Rank – Invesp
www.invesp.com/blog-rank/gardening‎

A list of the top blogs in the Gardening category based on 20+ different factors including RSS membership, Number of incoming links, social media, monthly…

How cool is that? 50 targets all at once! Now you need to sort through them some but this is a great place to start. I said earlier that the last list with the social media, blogs and forums was the place to build relationships. That doesn’t mean that you can’t here but it is probably more likely there just due to the amount of interaction possibilities that are afforded to you.

Go ahead try it! Type in a search window “ your niche” blog lists. Nothing but net!

Now you have 3 pretty good lists. The members and the lines between these entries as to how you got to them may very well disappear. Yes you can ask to do a guest post for someone from your list of lists.

The thing to rememeber is that although these lists may be different in maybe the designed type of method you have available to use but as I said the lines blur and everyone on your list becomes a target of opportunity!

How then do you stay organized? There are other ways but I happen to use a spreadsheet.

This is how mine is set up. Just a way I use to keep track of what I am doing and have done. Who they are where else on the web are they even phone #s what do they do and what you did on each interaction and how and if they responded to you.

There is one more column that needs to go in there though and it should probably be right after the type of outlet. That is how are you going to approach this target.

There are 2 main reasons you may be targeting a site, and those are:

1. looking to get links to your site from another high ranking site to convince Google and Bing and Yahoo that you might have something of value to say.

2. Looking at a lesser quality (with high traffic) site to get some of their traffic to also give you a look over.

Back to the old gardening site. There are thousands of gardening sites find one with very high traffic but maybe a lesser quality about them.

NOTE: if you can get high traffic and a high rating by all means, do so. What I am saying is don’t automatically bypass a maybe new site that many people have found just because it is not yet rated highly in Google’s eyes.

Now let us figure out how to approach your targets. Finesse and human kindness are both very important here . Above all else you are talking to another human being here (that is where the kindness comes in). You are also sending an e-mail to someone that may get 20,50,100 or more requests a day (this is the finesse part).

We will move into those kinds of questions next week when we will look at approach tactics and how to stand out from all of the requests that people get for links.

See you then,
LANCE

WARNING: This may sound like it was a Podcast and the grammar may be off some but I needed to get it to you all!

Creative Commons Podcast Transcripts

We’re going to talk about here today, and I think it’s kind of important, especially when you’re first starting out. I spoke, briefly, in the beginning, about having the music on the website; and I got that out of a Creative Commons website. It’s FreeMusicArchives.org. It’s free music. It’s open source music. It’s creative commons stuff. It’s wonderful stuff, and it is free; open to the public.

And there are several things you can get there. Not so much on that particular website. They deal with music only, but how about if you need photographs for your website? And I desperately need those. I know that. But how do you take a picture? You’re out in Southern Africa and you look up, and there it is, starting at you at a dead stop, waiting for your next move. It’s an SEO. You take your picture of it. No, you can’t do that. What do you take pictures of when you’re talking about SEO? Charts and graphs and things? I guess that would be okay. Maybe an infograph or something like that. That might do something. I’ve got to explore that a lot.

Let me get back to what you can do because you’re probably not doing this SEO thing. I mean, except for yourself, you’re probably selling little purple electronic squirrels or something like that. Whatever you’re doing, you need to get photos for that. Whether you have a travel website, and a podcast, and a blog, having photographs brings up the proportionality of it. It makes it palatable. It makes it better. It makes the world a better place. Am I right?

And that’s a good thing. Creative Commons has also photographs. There are photographs out there for you to use. You can also get music. Oh, we talked about music. Yes, you can get music twice, if you want. You can get software. Now, this is a big thing. The gneu. What it is, is a group that sanctions a software and takes care of it. If you are familiar with the operating system Linux, that’s where you’ll find a lot of it. But much of it, you can run on Windows, so it’s definitely worth a look. I run Open Office. I haven’t touched a Word Document in so long; it’s not funny. Open Office is without cost. It’s available and it’s compatible with Windows, and it’s compatible with Word and all of the things that are out there.

So, there are no problems within that respect. If you happen to run a Linux system, which has a very, very nice user-friendly graphics user interface (GUI) on it – nowadays, at least 10.04 does. The Ubuntu 10.04 has a very nice user interface. It’s very Windows like. You have to get used to where some of the things are, but if you need a graphics application, you can go look at it and temporarily bring it up into your computer, use it, and then get rid of it if you don’t need it anymore. So doesn’t take up the space. They store it for you. That’s a pretty nice deal.

If you need specialized software, like I was translating some documents from English to Japanese the other day, and they had some software to actually do that. It was not a real good translation. I had someone that I needed to translate some English into Japanese for, and he told me the translation was a little bit strange, but it got the point across to him. So, this software is available out there on a Linux system, but it’s also available to you if you run Windows. And it’ll let you whether it will run on Windows at the beginning or not.

When you’re first starting out and all you seem to be hemorrhaging money, all of this is a very, very good thing. This is all public domain. Oh, they’ve even got CAD drawings that are available to you. So, if you’re doing some CAD application. I looked at some of this, and it’s going in a lot of different directions. And let me run down some of these for you. Some of the things that you can do. Photos on Flickr. A lot of them are creative commons. Yahoo has a photo filter. You put in the CC or Creative Commons and it will filter the ones that are available to you out for you. CreativeCommons.org. Go to CreativeCommons.org and it will explain an awful lot to you.

Do include the licensing, because it’s usable out there for you, but there are some rights reserved; and different levels of that. If you have to attribute the work that you put on your website to a specific author, to a specific photographer, or whatever media you’re using, that is a very, very doable thing, isn’t it? And I think that’s a great thing to be able to use that software or those pictures in that way. That’s one of the lower level licenses. Some of it, you can’t alter. Some of them come up and they say: “Hey, this is okay. You can alter it. You can tear it up. You can change it. You can do whatever you want it. And you don’t even have to tell anybody where you got it.” Some of them have higher levels of licensing than that, but be very careful about that. Ensure you know what the licensing says and what it does. And CreativeCommons.org can help you with that; can get you adjusted to doing the right thing to keep you out of jail for using other people’s stuff, which is always a good thing.

Now, one of the big things about being able to be in this business is to be able to do your work from anywhere. But I had things like the Bahamas. My wife and I have a little place in Italy that we go to. Sing Sing Prison wasn’t what I had in mind when I brought that up to you, okay? So, pay attention to the licensing. And if it’s more than you can do – more than you feel comfortable with -, move on to a different photograph. I mean there are thousands, and thousands, and there may be millions of photographs on the Internet.

Let me run down some of these music ones here. I already talked about FreeMusicArchive.org. And most of these are .ORG. CreativeCommons.org. LastFM. Oh, if you are doing a podcast and you want some sound, or if you’re a thespian and you’re doing a play, go to FreeSound.org and you can get these sounds to use in your system. Some of them are for sale as well as some of the music. All of the music that you’ve heard on my website, by the way, or heard on my podcast, by the way, is Creative Common stuff. And I think that will give you a start to start looking for this type of stuff. It’s also called public domain. It’s also called creative commons. It’s also called fair use. So, those are three other names you may be able to get out on Google and do a search on this stuff, and take a look, and see what it has to benefit you. And only you know that. You know, if you need pictures. If you don’t need pictures, don’t look up pictures. If you need a little bit of music to kind of jazz up some things, great. Great. If you want some music just to listen to, that’s not a bad thing either.

Okay, that’s about enough of Creative Commons.

Google Keyword Tool: Demo movie included

April 2, 2013 in GET STARTED

www.simplesharebuttons.comPass em onFacebookPinterestGoogle+StumbleUponLinkedInTwitterRedditEmailDigg

http://www.webdrivenincome.com/1764-2/

Here we are at the Google Keyword Tool. It is free! And free is good especially at this point. There are other keyword tools that you need to payGoogle keyword tool GOOGLE KEY WORD TOOL TUTORIAL
for and I will show you those but, this will do you for right now. The video showed you how to gain access and get started a little. After you type in your keywords at the top you need to know that there are 2 tabs about half way down on the left one is for Ad Groups and the other is for keywords. To the left of that there are a couple of radio buttons that say broad, exact, and phrase. You will be looking for more fine tuned keywords or exact terms. The difference being is if you typed in “blue ceramic frogs” and clicked on broad you will get all of the items under blue and under ceramics and under frogs. In other words how to do ceramics the materials for ceramics people selling kilns… as well as the life cycle of a frog and what it eats as a polliwog and the different varieties of a frog. That isn’t what you or your customers are looking for. So select Exact is the setting you want. Now look at the columns. Here are the descriptions that Google give for each one of these:

Competition: The number of advertisers worldwide bidding on each keyword relative to all keywords across Google. The shaded bar represents a general low-to-high guide to help you determine how competitive ad placement is for a particular keyword.

Global Monthly Searches: The approximate 12-month average of the number of searches on Google for each keyword in all locations, languages, devices, and keyword match types. This statistic includes traffic in all countries and languages. If we don’t have enough data for a particular keyword, you’ll see this noted with a dash (-).

Local Monthly Searches: The approximate 12-month average of the number of searches on Google for each keyword in the locations, languages, and devices that you selected. If you’ve selected multiple locations, a location that isn’t a country, or if we don’t have enough data, you’ll see this noted with a dash (-).

So with a little reasoning here we can look at a very low competition word or phrase with a high amount of searches. AS LONG AS THE WORDS ACTUALLY APPLY TO WHAT YOU ARE SELLING OR YOU SITE.
It doesn’t do any good to attract all kinds of traffic if you weren’t what they were looking for, right? You want people that are looking for what you have and when they find you they are half way though the sale already.

Being everything to everyone is not your goal and trying to be will cause you not to be you anymore. Develop a consistency with your posting. Do you have to post every week on Monday and Friday …no. If you want to post twice a week try to post twice a week or if once a week is your way to do it try to post once a week but with a twice aBlueFullMoonwith wpjhygsize-medium wp-image-1440″ alt=”Blogg and bloger wordpress is it” src=”http://www.webdrivenincome.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/las-lunes-300×300.png” width=”300″ height=”300″ /> week post don’t suddenly go to once every two weeks without warning. People get used to your journal at a certain time and will wait.  Of course if you are out of town or ill just let people know this. Your following will understand this.

Every now and then perform something out of the ordinary with your blogg.  Did you catch that misspelling of blog?  I was just trying to keep you on your toes. If you usually post about how to take care of electric squirrels just talk about something relates but different from the ordinary. How to use electric squirrels in decorating your home for fall or roasting electric squirrels on a grill…

If you can manage make mega posts. This can mean several things. A mega post can be a very long post or an in depth study that may have taken some time to put together. Perhaps you can hit several mediums at once. Blog, Podcast , video and an info-graphic that all support each other.

People and search engines love well thought out and valuable lists. Small golden nuggets on each line or other blogger gadgets and things.

Maybe a 100 best ways to play with electrical squirrels. This seems to be the numerical limit in most cases but you can push it to an odd but higher number 189 of the best squirrel oldies from the 60s. If it is very valuable information a smaller number may get you by for example the blog Corbet Barr and Think Traffic has a list that went viral of 21 things you can do ……. I am not sure how many times this has been liked and re-tweeted talked about in others blogs.

Now go back and post!  Go become one of the most popular blogs!

A plethora of knowledge : Just for the taking!

www.simplesharebuttons.comPass em onFacebookPinterestGoogle+StumbleUponLinkedInTwitterRedditEmailDigg

I am going to put together quite a bit of material for you especially concerning this first part of your journey. It does seem a little unfair that during this portion of this journey you will know the least, but are asked to make some major decisions that will affect the rest of your journey. Don’t worry too much because your plan will tend to adjust as you become more knowledgeable.  Probably several times.   I will do my best to get you through this. There will be info-graphics to support this there will be podcaststs and videocasts as well as of course the written word. There will be many links to these other sources and some outside sources. There will also be a link  to get you to the dictionary.

Let us start with a reading assignment . I am going to ask you to read this “Your Reading List” and I do not want you to answer right away in fact take these questions and spend some time thinking about them after all your future does rely on what you are doing so let us do a good job. Take about a week. Carry this with you with a pen, pencil, crayon, or chalk and write down some of your answers. Welcome to marketing research.  No I am not going to ask you to define marketing or even develop a strategy page but simply choosing a niche is part of what will become your marketing strategy because in selecting this you are partially defining your audience.  Targeting specific keywords also does this. Certain elements of our society tend to use different lingo than others. An example of this is a person with a PhD. will tend to select different words to search by than someone in high school. It would do you some good to start thinking now who your target audience is and what type of marketing strategy you may want to develop.  That is if you know the answer to the question what is a strategy?  If you do not we will teach you a little later.  Do not get bogged down on any one answer. If you have several ways to go that is great after you get finished we will do some research and figure out the best way to go with you overall market potential.

Let us start by what you think that you want to do. Let us say that you like to make little blue frogs with glasses out of ceramics and want to sell them online. Great this is a good start Now I am going to ask you a couple of really hard questions but you need to be very honest with yourself in answering. #1. What do you want to get out of this? #2 is this vehicle one that can get you to that point? The first you probably have an idea of. Maybe a car payment for that Mercedes you have always wanted or maybe you want some notoriety and maybe a better living, quit your job now and work for yourself? Make a very very good living Yup join the 1%. Maybe help with someone through college or help with moms medical bills. Then there is the retirement thing where maybe you didn’t do so well with the saving or perhaps got cleaned out on any number of occasions but can’t see the social security thing getting you by. All very good reasons but look deep into what is really important in your life. Giving a better contribution to your church? For most of us a Ferrari would be nice (OK really nice) but wouldn’t take care of some of the more human desires.

The Internet is a wonderful place even for something like ceramic blue frogs with glasses there is probably a market. Is there enough of a market to get you to the place you want to go? I do not know, I have not looked at this particular situation. I will step out on a limb here and tell you I didn’t think it will probably get you to a sustainable living driving a Ferrari but I may be wrong. What if they really catch on? This is what they would call a fad and not long term but sometimes that is quite alright. If you are OK with this and want to spend the time and effort to “create” the fad then go for it!

E-mail can steal your dreams

A ton of things to touch on here but I want to talk about what I call the blue meanies, after the Beatles Yellow Submarine characters. Once you start in this business these blue meanies rear their ugly heads. It is amazing how many of them there are. You on the other hand are going full bore and doing everything you can to get this business running. What can one do?

You can start out by knowing the enemy and they come in many shapes and sizes. One type is the person you trust or at least they listen and talk to you regularly. They will even ask you what is up and in your excitement having to do with a major accomplishment in your quest you share it with them. Hoping for support and you don’t get it. Their eyes glaze over when you say the words “internet marketing” . These are your friends that go home and watch television or hit the pub on the way home from work. This is after working for someone else all day for a wage. Exchanging their time and talent for money. They place their value in this. They let someone else tell them how much they are worth. They often times do not feel fulfilled by their days. They claim that they are too tired to do anything else to get out of the rat race and so far have run ahead of the re-sizing pink slip. That slip can be found at all levels by the way. They are content to live their lives at the will of others no matter how precarious their lifestyle is. These same people would be happier if you were not trying to succeed on your own. Their reactions to your small successes may be a tease or it may be outright contempt. At the very least a display however slightly (and I haven’t been able to put a name on it) with a little surprised look that really tells you what they are thinking without them saying it. These people suck your spirit from you. It is not impossible for you to turn them around but you are too busy with your project right now. They can make you question what you are doing when you can see that you have made strides in creation a sustainable business. Let me ask you a question…have you ever gone on a life changing vacation somewhere? Maybe to Rome or maybe the Grand Canyon and are so excited when you get back that you want to tell them about it and their eyes just glaze over? That is the same type of person I was talking about earlier.

Remember this! This is your life! It is yours to spend as you wish. I for one would much rather spend it in a quest to free myself from the usual daily grind. Looking for a freedom that will allow me to live my life on my own term. Even if I did not make it on my death bed I can say I tried. If I did make it and I made it very early in my life…(it isn’t a bad thing even later in life) what a wonderful thing! This is more than money! This is freedom to pick up your kids at school. Not loose a couple of hours pay because you went to the doctor. Work because you are excited at what this work will do for you and your cause and your family.

Oh and do not check your e-mail 15 times a day.

Don’t let them take your joy!! Run with it hard and fast as your legs will carry you!
